Minoan Lines passenger ferry serving the Greek domestic network
About the operator
A Cretan ferry company with Grimaldi Group links
Minoan Lines is a long-established Greek ferry company based in Heraklion and now part of the
Grimaldi Group. Its current domestic passenger operation is centred on the Piraeus–Milos–Heraklion
corridor, giving travellers a direct mainland connection to Crete as well as a useful Cycladic stop
at Milos.
The distinction between the domestic and Adriatic products matters. Minoan Lines’ own website
promotes Greece–Italy journeys, but it also states that the company acts as general sales agent in
Greece for Grimaldi Euromed on the Adriatic. That means an Italy journey bought through the Minoan
sales environment may be operated by a Grimaldi vessel rather than one of the three principal Minoan
domestic ships.
For the domestic route, Minoan combines large vehicle decks with cabins, reclining seats,
restaurants, bars, shops and Wi-Fi. This makes the ferry particularly practical for travellers
taking a car to Crete, families carrying more luggage than they would normally take on a flight, and
passengers who prefer an overnight sea journey.
Planning distinction: this page treats Piraeus–Milos–Heraklion as the current Minoan-operated domestic network. Greece–Italy services are included where useful for comparison but identified as Grimaldi Euromed services represented by Minoan Lines in Greece.
Mainland Greece, the Cyclades and Crete
Minoan Lines routes
The current domestic network is one through corridor with three useful passenger sectors. The exact
calling pattern and sailing time vary by date, so use the live booking result for the definitive
itinerary.
Core domestic serviceCrete
Attica
Piraeus
Crete
Heraklion
This is Minoan Lines’ principal domestic connection. Many sailings run overnight and can include
Milos as an intermediate call, making a private cabin especially useful when the arrival is early in
the morning.
Piraeus departures are currently associated with Gate E2
Passenger and vehicle carriage is available
Check whether Milos appears as an intermediate stop
Milos forms the intermediate island stop on the domestic corridor and is also sold as a journey in
its own right. It can be a practical option for travellers wanting a conventional vehicle ferry
rather than a smaller passenger-only fast craft.
Cars and touring vehicles can be booked subject to space
Useful for longer island stays with your own vehicle
Summer demand can tighten cabin and garage availability
The Milos–Heraklion sector connects a Cycladic island directly with Crete without returning to
Piraeus. It is particularly useful for a two-island itinerary when a vehicle or substantial luggage
is part of the trip.
Available in both directions within the through route
Check departure time carefully because it may be overnight
Vehicle and cabin inventory is shared with through passengers
The visual route map shows the broader Minoan and Grimaldi context. The currently promoted
Minoan-operated domestic corridor is Piraeus–Milos–Heraklion; Adriatic services sold through Minoan
in Greece are operated within the wider Grimaldi network.
For planning with Minoan Lines, use the map to compare the representative route groups above,
including Piraeus–Heraklion, Piraeus–Milos, Milos–Heraklion. It is most useful for judging which
departure or arrival point best fits the rest of the journey rather than as a substitute for the
live timetable.
After choosing the most practical route, compare the live Minoan Lines sailing for departure time,
calling pattern, passenger requirements and the facilities or accommodation shown for that service.
The complete itinerary and arrival location can matter more than a small difference in the headline
fare.
Schedules, intermediate calls and ship assignments can change. Always confirm the live itinerary and
operating carrier before making a tight rail, flight or onward-ferry connection.

Ports and places
Three ports define the current domestic journey
Piraeus is the mainland gateway, Milos adds a distinctive Cycladic stop, and Heraklion gives direct
access to central Crete and the island’s main road network.
Mainland gateway
Piraeus
Minoan Lines currently identifies Gate E2 for its domestic route. Piraeus is large and traffic can
be slow, so allow time to reach the correct gate, especially with a vehicle or during the summer
peak.
Milos is known for volcanic scenery, colourful fishing settlements and beaches scattered around the
island. Taking a car can make the ferry especially attractive for travellers planning to explore
beyond the main bus routes.
Heraklion’s city-centre port is close to the historic core and is a practical starting point for
Knossos, north-coast resorts and road trips both east and west across Crete.
If Milos is part of a longer Piraeus–Heraklion sailing, compare the times and accommodation for the
complete sector you are actually travelling. A late-night island call can feel very different from a
daytime departure.
Sleep, sit or travel economy
Cabins and passenger accommodation
Minoan Lines’ large domestic ferries are designed for long crossings. Accommodation ranges from
economy travel and reclining seats to private cabins and higher-category rooms, with the precise
inventory depending on the ship.
Private cabins can make the overnight Piraeus–Heraklion journey much more restful. Outside and higher-category cabins add natural light, privacy and additional space.
Economy accommodation
Best considered for
Economy travel gives access to the ship’s public passenger areas without reserving a private cabin.
It can suit daytime sectors or travellers comfortable using lounges for the crossing.
Flexible budget travel
Reclining and aircraft-style seats
Best considered for
Reserved reclining seats offer more certainty than general lounge seating and can be a useful middle
ground on Piraeus–Milos or passengers who do not need a bed.
A reserved place without cabin cost
Inside cabins
Best considered for
Inside cabins provide beds, a private bathroom and personal space without a sea-view window. Two-
and four-berth arrangements are common across the domestic ships.
Overnight privacy at a lower cabin price
Outside cabins
Best considered for
Outside cabins add a porthole or window and are available in several berth configurations. They can
sell out early on busy summer overnight departures.
Couples and families valuing natural light
Suites and premium cabins
Best considered for
Kydon Palace and other vessels list higher-category two-person accommodation with added living space
and features such as larger bathrooms, television or a mini fridge.
More space on the long crossing
Accessible cabins
Best considered for
Minoan Lines lists specially designed cabins and accessible public areas. Capacity is limited, and
the operator recommends arranging reduced-mobility accommodation and assistance in advance.
Passengers requiring adapted accommodation
Cabin booking tip
On an overnight Piraeus–Heraklion sailing, compare the cabin price against the cost and
inconvenience of arriving tired. The cheapest passenger fare is not always the best-value whole
journey.
During the crossing
Restaurants, lounges, shops and Wi-Fi
The three principal domestic ships provide a broader onboard experience than a basic ferry. Exact
opening hours and facilities still depend on the vessel and departure.
Restaurant and self-service choices are available on the principal Minoan ships. Lounges provide places to relax outside your cabin or reserved seat. Onboard shops offer travel essentials, gifts, fashion and personal items. Outdoor decks offer sea views when weather and operating conditions permit.
À la carte and self-service dining
Minoan Lines promotes both à la carte and self-service restaurants on its principal domestic ships,
with Mediterranean and international choices.
Bars and lounges
Indoor lounges, bars and café areas provide quieter spaces for coffee, drinks or relaxing during the
long crossing.
Onboard shops
Published ship information includes stores selling items such as perfumes, clothing, accessories,
toys, souvenirs, footwear and books.
Wi-Fi internet
Minoan Lines states that Wi-Fi internet is available across its vessels. Connection quality at sea
can vary with coverage, demand and ship location.
Entertainment
Depending on the ship, facilities can include live music, a piano bar, disco or other entertainment
spaces, particularly on the larger overnight ferries.
Long-distance ferry design
Cabins, restaurants, shops and substantial public spaces are designed around journeys lasting
several hours rather than short shuttle crossings.

Bring your vehicle or pet
Vehicles and pets
The Minoan domestic ferries are well suited to road-trip travel, but accurate vehicle details and
advance pet arrangements are essential. Alternative-fuel vehicles have additional safety conditions.
Motorhomes, caravans and trailers need the correct total dimensions in the booking. Electric, plug-in hybrid, LPG and natural-gas vehicles must be declared and comply with fuel or charge limits. Pets require an electronic ticket, the correct travel arrangement and the required health documentation.
Cars and motorcycles
Book the correct vehicle type and registration details. Only the driver normally remains with the
vehicle for loading, and access to the garage is prohibited during the voyage.
Motorhomes, caravans and trailers
Touring vehicles are accepted subject to deck space. Include the full length and height, including
tow bars, trailers, roof equipment and bicycle carriers.
Alternative-fuel vehicles
Electric and rechargeable-hybrid batteries must be at no more than 40% charge, while LPG or
natural-gas tanks must be at no more than 50% capacity. Report for loading 90 minutes before
departure.
Pets
Pets must be entered in the booking and issued a zero-value electronic ticket. Large animals depend
on kennel or pet-cabin capacity; health and vaccination documents must be available.
Do not arrive with an undeclared alternative-fuel vehicle or a large pet without confirmed permitted
accommodation. Either issue can prevent boarding even when the passenger ticket itself is valid.
Before you reach the ramp
Check-in, documents, luggage and boarding
Most problems can be avoided by checking the gate, completing the ticket process early and making
sure every vehicle and pet detail is correct before you reach the port.
Minoan Lines provides web check-in for its domestic Heraklion–Milos–Piraeus route. Domestic passengers and vehicles should report at least one hour before departure; alternative-fuel vehicles need 90 minutes.
Recommended travel sequence
When booking
Enter travellers, vehicle and pets correctly
Names must match identification. Select the correct accommodation and vehicle dimensions, declare
alternative fuel and issue the required pet ticket.
Before travel
Complete domestic web check-in
Use the Minoan web check-in service for the Heraklion–Milos–Piraeus domestic route, then save or
print the e-ticket and keep it with the required identification.
At least 1 hour before
Report for normal domestic boarding
Published boarding instructions require domestic passengers and vehicles to report at the port
offices or embarkation area at least one hour before departure.
90 minutes before
Alternative-fuel vehicles report earlier
Electric, plug-in hybrid, LPG and natural-gas vehicles should be at the port for loading 1½ hours
before departure and must meet the published charge or fuel limits.
During loading
Take essentials out of the vehicle
Garage access is prohibited during the voyage. Keep medicines, travel documents, valuables, chargers
and anything needed overnight with you.
Is this the right crossing?
When Minoan Lines can be a practical choice
Minoan Lines is especially useful when Crete is part of a road trip, when you want to travel with a
motorhome or substantial luggage, or when an overnight ferry can replace a flight plus hotel
transfer. The through Piraeus–Milos–Heraklion pattern also creates a useful island-to-island
connection between the Cyclades and Crete.
Compare the whole trip rather than only the headline fare. A private cabin can transform an
overnight crossing, while a vehicle fare may be offset by the freedom to avoid car hire after
arrival. For Milos, consider whether taking your own car adds enough value to justify the garage
fare and island driving arrangements.
For Greece–Italy travel, pay particular attention to the operating carrier. Minoan sells Adriatic
journeys through its Greek sales network, but the current site identifies Minoan as general sales
agent for Grimaldi Euromed. The ship, international check-in time and conditions therefore follow
the actual service shown in the booking.
Common planning questions
Minoan Lines FAQs
Which routes does Minoan Lines currently operate in Greece?
Minoan Lines currently promotes its domestic operated network as Piraeus–Milos–Heraklion, including
the Piraeus–Heraklion, Piraeus–Milos and Milos–Heraklion sectors in both directions. Live sailing
patterns remain definitive.
Does Minoan Lines operate ferries to Italy?
Minoan Lines sells Greece–Italy services and acts as general sales agent in Greece for Grimaldi
Euromed. The current Minoan site distinguishes those Adriatic services from the domestic
Piraeus–Milos–Heraklion network operated under Minoan Lines.
Which gate does Minoan Lines use at Piraeus?
Current Minoan Lines information identifies Gate E2 for domestic Piraeus departures to Milos and
Heraklion. Piraeus operations can change, so still confirm the gate printed on your ticket and any
message received on the day.
Are cabins available on Minoan Lines ferries?
Yes. Depending on the ship, choices can include economy accommodation, reclining or aircraft-style
seats, inside cabins, outside cabins, premium two-person accommodation or suites and adapted cabins
for passengers with reduced mobility.
Can I take a car, motorcycle, motorhome or caravan?
Yes, subject to garage availability. Book the actual vehicle category and dimensions, including a
caravan, trailer, roof box, tow bar or bicycle carrier that changes the total length or height.
Vehicle passengers should take voyage essentials out of the vehicle before loading because garage
access is prohibited while at sea.
What rules apply to electric, hybrid, LPG or natural-gas vehicles?
Alternative-fuel vehicles must be declared. Current domestic instructions limit electric and
rechargeable-hybrid batteries to 40% charge and LPG or natural-gas tanks to 50% capacity. Damaged
batteries, tanks or fuel systems can lead to refusal, and these vehicles should report for loading
90 minutes before departure.
Can pets travel with Minoan Lines?
Yes. Pets must be included in the booking and issued an electronic pet ticket. Small animals may
travel in carriers under the published rules, while larger pets depend on kennel or pet-cabin
capacity. Carry the required health and vaccination documents.
Can I use Minoan Lines web check-in?
Yes. Minoan Lines provides web check-in for the domestic Heraklion–Milos–Piraeus route. Download the
e-ticket to your phone or print it, then present it together with the required identity document
when boarding.
How early should I arrive for a Minoan Lines ferry?
The published domestic boarding instructions set a minimum of one hour before departure for
passengers and vehicles. Alternative-fuel vehicles should report 90 minutes before departure.
EUFerry recommends extra time during summer peaks, when travelling with a large vehicle or when
using Piraeus for the first time.
Can I travel with Minoan Lines as a foot passenger?
Yes. Foot passengers can book Minoan Lines domestic services subject to availability. Keep your
e-ticket and required identification ready for boarding, and follow the check-in time shown for your
selected sailing.
