Manxman is the company’s modern flagship conventional ferry.
About the operator
The Isle of Man’s lifeline ferry operator since 1830
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has linked the island with Great Britain and Ireland for more
than 190 years. Its passenger network is centred on Douglas, with Heysham providing the principal
year-round English connection and Liverpool, Larne and Dublin expanding the island’s Irish Sea
links.
The modern passenger fleet combines the conventional flagship Manxman, the high-speed Manannan and
veteran Ben-my-Chree. MV Arrow provides freight and resilience support. The mix matters because
journey time, cabins, lounges, pet facilities and vehicle capacity differ substantially between
vessels.
The 2026/27 programme is built around three principal passenger vessels: Manxman on the core Heysham
service, Manannan on Liverpool, and Ben-my-Chree supporting an expanded Ireland programme including
Dublin and Larne. Dry-dock or disruption cover can alter those assignments, so live service status
is definitive.
The normal 2026 passenger network has four route markets. Heysham is the core daily connection,
Liverpool combines summer fast-craft and winter weekend service, Larne is year-round, and Dublin is
seasonal but temporarily suspended in August 2026.

Heysham
Heysham is the principal year-round connection to England, published at up to 12 sailings each week
with a normal duration of about 3 hours 45 minutes. Manxman is the route’s flagship vessel, but
Ben-my-Chree is currently covering all Heysham sailings during Manxman’s extended dry-dock repairs.

Liverpool is the fast urban gateway, with daily seasonal sailings from April to October and weekend
services through winter. The current route page publishes about 2 hours 45 minutes on Manannan and
around 4 hours 15 minutes on a conventional vessel.

Useful for rail-connected city breaks and onward travel
Larne is now a year-round Northern Ireland route, with current published journey times of about 2
hours 45 minutes on a fast craft or 4 hours 45 minutes on a conventional vessel. Dublin is seasonal,
normally about 2 hours 55 minutes on Manannan.

This schematic summarises the three representative current route groups described above. It is not a
complete network map or timetable; the live operator booking result is definitive.
For planning with Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, use the map to compare the representative route
groups above, including Douglas–Heysham, Douglas–Liverpool, Douglas–Larne / Dublin. It is most
useful for judging which departure or arrival point best fits the rest of the journey rather than as
a substitute for the live timetable.
After choosing the most practical route, compare the live Isle of Man Steam Packet Company sailing
for departure time, calling pattern, passenger requirements and the facilities or accommodation
shown for that service. The complete itinerary and arrival location can matter more than a small
difference in the headline fare.
Manxman is currently out for extended dry-dock repairs, with Ben-my-Chree covering Heysham.

Ports and gateways
Douglas at the centre of the Irish Sea network
Every scheduled passenger route starts or finishes at Douglas. The choice of mainland port can
dramatically change the road or rail journey on either side of the crossing.
Island home port
Douglas
Douglas is the company’s home port and the island’s principal passenger ferry gateway. The terminal
sits beside the capital, making onward bus, taxi and road connections straightforward for visitors
and residents.
Liverpool offers the faster city-centre connection, while Heysham is the core year-round vehicle and
freight route with direct road access toward the M6. Compare the mainland journey as well as the
crossing time.
Larne now provides a year-round Northern Ireland connection. Dublin remains part of the seasonal
network but its scheduled services are temporarily cancelled between 23 July and 1 October 2026.
For August 2026, plan from the live timetable rather than a normal seasonal route chart: Manxman’s
repair programme and the temporary Dublin suspension are changing which ships and ports are
available.
Sit, upgrade or sleep
Cabins and passenger accommodation
Manxman provides the broadest accommodation choice, with private cabins from practical internal
rooms to executive balcony cabins. Manannan and Ben-my-Chree focus more heavily on lounge and
reserved-seat upgrades.
Private cabins are valuable on overnight and early-morning conventional-ferry sailings. Manxman includes sea-view, accessible, pet-friendly and executive balcony cabin categories.
Standard public seating
General passenger lounges and open seating are included according to vessel. This is the normal
choice for many daytime crossings.
Best considered forShort daytime journeys where a private room is unnecessary
Reserved lounges
Manxman, Manannan and Ben-my-Chree offer Niarbyl reserved lounges, giving passengers an assigned
seat and a more predictable place to relax.
Best considered forBusy sailings or travellers who want a guaranteed seat
Manxman internal & sea-view cabins
Manxman has 4-berth internal cabins and sea-view cabins with en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee
facilities and onboard entertainment.
Best considered forOvernight or early departures where privacy and sleep matter

Manxman’s highest cabin category includes a double bed, en-suite bathroom, larger TV, fridge and
private walk-out balcony.
Best considered forPassengers wanting the most private and premium conventional-ferry option
Pet-friendly cabins
Manxman has designated pet-friendly sea-view cabins, including accessible pet-cabin options. Pet
cabins must be booked in advance and have a two-pet maximum.
Best considered forPassengers who want their dog or cat in a private cabin
Accessible cabins and seating
Manxman has accessible internal and sea-view cabins, while vessel and port assistance arrangements
vary. Accessible accommodation is limited and should be reserved early.
Best considered forPassengers requiring an adapted cabin, lift access or advance assistance
Accommodation booking tip
Confirm the vessel first. Manxman has the widest cabin range, but current maintenance can substitute
Ben-my-Chree on Heysham, changing the facilities available on a dated sailing.
During the crossing

provides the broadest mix, while Manannan is designed around a shorter high-speed journey.
Dining outlets and cafés vary by vessel and sailing time. Premium and reserved lounges provide quieter upgrade options. Family and children’s facilities are available on the principal passenger vessels. Outdoor deck access depends on vessel, sea conditions and weather.
Dining and cafés
Manxman offers multiple food and drink venues, while Manannan and Ben-my-Chree provide cafés, bars
and route-appropriate catering.
Premium and exclusive lounges
Premium lounges are available across the passenger fleet. Manxman also has the Injebreck exclusive
lounge with reclining pod seats and complimentary refreshments.
Connectivity

Vehicles, pets and accessibility
Steam Packet carries private vehicles and provides several pet and accessibility options, but the
correct vehicle dimensions, pet arrangement and assistance requirements need to be declared before
travel.
Cars, motorhomes and touring vehicles can travel on passenger sailings subject to ship-specific limits. Motorcycles and bicycles can be booked; larger commercial vehicles may need the freight service. Pet options include in-vehicle travel, kennels and Manxman’s pet lounges or pet-friendly cabins.
Cars, motorhomes and private vans
Private vehicles can be booked on passenger sailings within vessel and terminal limits. Manxman’s
published maximum vehicle envelope reaches 4 metres high and 18 metres long, but booking categories
and ship-specific restrictions still apply.
Measure height, length and width with roof boxes or rear loads fitted
Large commercial vehicles should be booked through freight
Vehicle passengers must meet the minimum 45-minute check-in
Motorcycles, bicycles and trailers
Motorcycles and bicycles are accepted on passenger services. Trailers and caravans must be entered
accurately so the correct deck space is reserved.
Include trailer or caravan dimensions in the booking
Follow crew instructions on securing motorcycles and cycles
Check the actual vessel because deck arrangements differ
Travelling with pets
Pets may remain in the vehicle free of charge. Bookable kennels are available, while Manxman
additionally provides pet lounges and pet-friendly cabins.
Manxman kennel fee and pet-lounge space are bookable
Pet-friendly cabins have a two-pet maximum
Ireland routes can require additional pet-entry documentation and checks
Reduced mobility and assistance
Assistance requirements should be declared during booking so port and vessel staff can plan
boarding, lift access and seating.
Manxman has three large passenger lifts
Manannan and Ben-my-Chree each have lift arrangements for passenger access
Accessible cabins on Manxman are limited and should be booked early
Before you reach check-in
Check-in, documents, luggage and boarding
Steam Packet’s current terms set different minimum check-in times for foot and vehicle passengers.
Operational changes can also alter terminals and vessel assignments, so check your sailing status
before setting out.
Keep your booking reference and required identification ready before joining check-in. Vehicle passengers should arrive early enough to complete check-in at least 45 minutes before departure.
Recommended travel sequence

Current 2026 changes
Check Manxman and Dublin service updates
Manxman is presently in extended dry dock and Dublin sailings from 23 July to 1 October 2026 are
cancelled. Confirm the vessel and route before leaving for the port.
At boarding
Follow crew directions and take essentials upstairs
Once parked, keep medicines, documents, valuables and anything needed during the journey with you
because car-deck access is restricted after departure.
Choose the right route and vessel
How to compare a Steam Packet journey
Start with the mainland gateway. Heysham is the dependable year-round English route, Liverpool is
faster and more city-centred, Larne is the year-round Northern Ireland connection, and Dublin is a
seasonal option when operating.
Then compare the vessel. Manannan is the fast craft, while Manxman and Ben-my-Chree are conventional
ferries with very different cabin, lounge and vehicle arrangements. In August 2026 the normal
assignment pattern is disrupted by Manxman’s dry-dock repairs.
Finally check the live sailing status. The temporary Dublin cancellation and Manxman maintenance are
exactly the kind of operational changes that make a dated timetable more useful than a generic route
list.
