Ireland direct to Normandy
A strong alternative to driving through Britain and crossing the Channel
Rosslare to Cherbourg is one of Ireland’s most useful direct ferry routes to continental Europe.
Stena Line and Brittany Ferries both sell passenger sailings on the corridor, giving motorists a way
to avoid the British landbridge and its additional driving and border crossings.
Brittany Ferries publishes outbound crossing times of roughly 17 to 20 hours depending on the
sailing. Stena Line also operates overnight Rosslare–Cherbourg services on its current France
programme, with exact duration and frequency determined by the live timetable.
Cars, motorcycles and larger leisure vehicles can be booked. Foot-passenger availability should be
checked for the chosen operator and sailing; Brittany Ferries explicitly supports foot travel to and
from Rosslare, while passenger arrangements can vary across the wider route calendar.
Rosslare Europort is connected to Ireland by the N25 and rail services, while Cherbourg gives direct
access to Normandy, Brittany and routes towards Paris. A cabin is a major part of the overnight
journey and should be included when comparing the total fare.
Dublin–Cherbourg is the main direct alternative from Ireland to northern France. Travellers bound
for northern Spain can compare Rosslare–Bilbao, while Cork–Roscoff is useful for western France and
Brittany.
Fleet update checked 6 October 2026: Brittany Ferries plans to deploy Barfleur on Rosslare–Cherbourg from 12 October 2026. Check the ship and passenger arrangements for your actual sailing. Official source
