Dorset to Normandy
Service status and alternative crossings
Service ending in October 2026. Brittany Ferries has brought forward the closure of direct Poole–Cherbourg sailings; Barfleur moves to Rosslare–Cherbourg from 12 October. Check any remaining departure directly with the operator and compare alternatives from Portsmouth.
Do not rely on the former daily service pattern or the previously announced November closure. Travellers with affected bookings should use the operator’s rebooking or refund instructions.
Cherbourg sits at the northern end of the Cotentin Peninsula, with road links towards Bayeux, Caen,
Mont-Saint-Michel and Brittany. For holidays in western Normandy, landing here can reduce the onward
drive compared with Calais or Dunkirk.
Poole is convenient for Dorset, the West Country and parts of southern England. The port is linked
to the wider road network through the A31, A35 and A350 corridors, while rail services reach central
Poole.
Compare Poole–Cherbourg with Portsmouth–Cherbourg as well as Portsmouth–Caen. The best route depends
on your starting point in Britain and the final drive after arriving in France.
